History of Freeburg C.C.S.D. #70

The Freeburg School District began its educational journey in the early 1900s.  This was when many one room schoolhouses were built in and around the Freeburg area.  The district first consisted of these small educational entities.  In the early 1950s under the leadership of Mr. Carl L. Barton, the citizens of Freeburg voted to consolidate these small schoolhouses into one reorganized school district.  The citizens of Freeburg also voted to build a new school for these children.

In 1954, this new school opened to the children of Freeburg and contained the north end of the building all the way the way to what is now the 3rd and 4th grade wing of the Middle School.  After additions in 1962, 1972, and 1996 the building is now close to 60 years old and remains in excellent condition.

Then, in 1998, student enrollment dictated the district expand its buildings.  The district purchased what was then a pizza restaurant on State Street to convert into three classrooms.  Enrollment continued to rise sharply requiring expansion onto these three classrooms just four years later.  In 2002, the Primary Center was completed and now houses Kindergarten-2nd grade.

Character Education

Beginning in 2011, the district implemented a district-wide initiative called "Character Education."  This initiative works to teach the habits of thought and deed that help people live and work together as families, friends, neighbors, and communities.

In school, character education must be approached comprehensively to include the emotional, intellectual, and moral qualities of a person or group.  It must offer multiple opportunities for student to learn about, discuss, and enact positive social behaviors.  Student leadership and involvement are essential for character education to become a part of a student's beliefs and action.

We believe strongly in teaching our students good character.  This way, we can instill, explain, and reinforce core values upon which good character is formed.

Technology Initiative

Freeburg C.C.S.D. #70 has confronted the prevalence of technology in classrooms head-on. To that end, all of our classrooms are equipped with the Interactive Touch Displays. These displays have proven to engage students at an early age to become active learners.  All of our teachers have document cameras to use in conjunction with the displays to streamline learning and introduce students to the capabilities of technology.

The Kindergarten classrooms are equipped with iPads to inspire creativity and hands-on learning.

The district also purchased Chromebooks for all students grades 1st through 8th.  The purpose was to acclimate our students to these devices prior to attending Freeburg High School.  Freeburg High School rolled out a 1:1 initiative beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.  It is hoped our students will become comfortable using the Chromebook prior to High School.

The district has also installed the necessary network infrastructure to accommodate the use of technology in all of our classrooms.  We currently own and operate approximately 700 chromebooks. Kindergarten thru 4th grade devices are housed in 10 carts, while 5th thru 8th grade take home their devices each night.
